Shortest Escalator & Railway: Micro-Transit Marvels

Moving mechanical escalator steps in a modern building

1. The Puchicala Escalator (Kawasaki, Japan)

Inside the basement of the More's Department Store in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, sits the officially certified Guinness World Record holder for the world's shortest escalator, affectionately named Puchicala.

Installed by Hitachi in 1989 to resolve a floor-level discrepancy between an underground parking concourse and the retail arcade, the escalator spans a vertical rise of only 83.4 centimeters (32.8 inches) and consists of merely five moving steps. The entire ride takes approximately 4.8 seconds from bottom to top.

2. Angels Flight Funicular Railway (Los Angeles, USA)

Built in 1901 to ferry residents up the steep grade of Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles, California, Angels Flight is renowned as the world's shortest standalone commercial funicular railway. Spanning a 33% grade over a track distance of only 298 feet (91 meters), the twin orange and black wooden cars, Sinai and Olivet, counterbalance each other along a cable-driven 2.5-minute journey.

Having served over 100 million passengers across more than a century of service, Angels Flight is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places as an enduring monument to urban micro-transit.
